Comfort Suites Burlington Near I-5

My husband and I recently stayed at Comfort Suites Burlington Washington while on vacation visiting western Washington. We stayed there for seven nights with my service dog. Upon initial check-in, we declared that we had a service animal with us and filled out the pet paperwork. The hotel staff told us there would be no pet fee charged because our dog was a service animal. Everything seemed fine until we entered the lobby after gathering our belongings, and the dog barked. Caleb, the hotel staff member, immediately stood up and accused us of lying about our service animal. He claimed, "Service animals don’t bark. I know what you are trying to do." Caleb called me a scammer and a liar. He demanded proof that our dog was a service animal or else we would be charged a pet fee. I explained to him that under Federal and State law, I didn't need to provide any proof or certification, nor was he allowed to ask for it. I also told him that in my twelve years of traveling with a service animal, I had never faced such an issue. Caleb continued to insist that he knew the law better than me and that he needed to see a "little white card" or else he would charge the pet fee. He illegally charged us a pet fee after we had already checked in. Things then became worse. Caleb harassed and bullied us, making us feel unwelcome each evening we returned to the hotel lobby. He gave us evil stares and sometimes laughed and pointed fingers at us. We felt our civil rights were violated by his behavior. On the day of checkout, we discovered that one of our tires was flat. The tire guy who fixed it told us that it had been slashed with what he thought might have been a box cutter.

It seems that Caleb harassed you daily without any fear of consequences from the management. This indicates that the management is weak and ineffective in dealing with such matters. Unfortunately, they couldn't take the appropriate steps to make things right for you. I'm sorry that you had to go through such a difficult experience.

Scott Turbush, the property manager, suggested that we should have reported Caleb's inappropriate behavior while we were still at the hotel. While we laughed about it then, we now realize that our inaction allowed Caleb's inappropriate behavior to continue, and that's not acceptable. It's vital that we take action when we see someone behaving inappropriately, as it can have serious repercussions, as evidenced by our slashed tire. We urge anyone who experiences similar behavior to take immediate action and report it to the hotel management. While we still find Caleb's behavior to be immature and moronic, we realize that it's not something to be taken lightly, and we hope that others will take our experience as a cautionary tale.
